Welcome to 'The Beatrice.'
I make unique & beautiful handcrafted wall-hangings. To create these I use the textile arts of macrame, weaving and crochet. I use various textiles including jute, cotton rope, wool, cord and embellishments such as wooden beads & feathers.
I usually start with an idea about what I want to make but from there it has a life of it's own. I design as I go and my head is ALWAYS full of new ideas.
'The Beatrice' was founded by me, Fibi Drew-Smith, a crafts enthusiast, with a life long passion for all things super cool, deliciously pretty and ultra groovy! Having spent my 'previous life' being creative, as a make-up artist, beauty therapist and personal stylist, I decided to fulfill a dream and set about pursuing a career in Interior Design. Being a total nerd, I passed all of the modules and related assignments of the course with flying colours and then proceeded to take on some advanced modules, just to keep 'busy.'
Whilst engaging in this study I found myself getting back into some crafts that I hadn't picked up for years. I LOVE crafting and the time I put into it is my happiest. I'm relaxed, bursting with creativity and totally zen. What could be better?
"Do what you love, love what you do."
I am based in my beloved city, Wellington, New Zealand and am wifey extraordinaire to Mark (the yarpie!), and mummy to Jordan (27, he survived!), Nikita (21, studying) and Cooper (10, and challenging everyday!)...oh and we mustn't forget, Coco, our precious but overindulged kitty cat & Layla, our ultra cute and sweet Cavoodle!
Aside from yummy crafts, I love interiors & interior design, a great quote, ultra good coffee, Whittaker's creamy dairy milk chocolate, a summertime margarita or 4, great winter boots (read, more than I need!), kitty cats, cute cavoodles, oodles of colour, working out (read, endeavouring to keep gravity from taking over!!), loads of reading of all genres and finding time for regular 'girl's weekends' away with the amazing 'chicky babes.'
"Beatrice, was the name of my great grandmother, after some research came the realisation that her life story was very sad and ended to soon.
The name Beatrice means - the bringer of happiness. I decided that the perfect way to honour the life of my great grandmother, Beatrice, was to dedicate my work, which is full of joy and happiness, to her memory."
